BOOK REVIEW: Noma the face of Poverty

By. Dr. K.W. Marck MD

Noma the face of Poverty is a firsthand account about noma by the late Dutch surgeon, Dr. K.W. Marck. Dr. Marck travelled to Sokoto, Nigeria in 1997 with a surgical team to provide life altering surgery to children afflicted with noma and other facial deformities. In his book, he details his first work mission and goes on to give a history of noma going back over 2,000 years. He ends his book with an overview of the disease, including its causes, prevention and surgical intervention. This important book comes at a critical time when the WHO is set to vote in the fall of 2023 on whether noma will become classified as a Neglected Tropical Disease, thereby focusing attention and resources aimed at eradicating this cruel and disfiguring disease.
