CLOSE UP!

A closer view of DOMFSS’ NAG Informative poster at the expo.

The Dalhousie Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Student Society (DOMFSS) participated in the Dalhousie Student Societies Expo to introduce students to the society and raise awareness about noma and the work of the Noma Action Group (NAG).

DOMFSS is a student-led society dedicated to advancing education, research, collaboration, and student engagement in oral and maxillofacial surgery. Through activities including journal clubs, clinical education sessions, research and critical appraisal workshops, patient education initiatives, and collaborative projects, the society aims to connect students with the broader scope and impact of oral and maxillofacial surgery.

As part of the expo, DOMFSS partnered with NAG to educate students about noma, a devastating but preventable orofacial disease that disproportionately affects vulnerable children in resource-limited settings. Our booth featured educational materials about noma and NAG, photographs illustrating its treatment and impact, and a QR code connecting students directly with NAG’s resources. We also held a bake sale fundraiser in support of NAG. Beyond fundraising, the event provided an important opportunity to start conversations about noma, increase awareness among future healthcare professionals, and encourage students to become involved in education and advocacy

We are grateful to the Noma Action Group for supporting our initiative and allowing us to share its educational resources. DOMFSS looks forward to continuing its collaboration with NAG and contributing to greater awareness, education, and advocacy surrounding noma.
